British Style / Logical Quotation

Why the British Style/ Logical Quotation should be standard for any and all written direction concerning copy.

American Style

The layout currently reads “Latest Recipes,” please update it to read “Celebrity Chef Recipes.”

Issues:

  1. The current layout does not actually read “Latest Recipes,”; it currently reads “Latest Recipes”.
  2. Does the client want the layout to read “Celebrity Chef Recipes.”? Or does the client want the layout to read “Celebrity Chef Recipes”?
  3. This causes additional confusion and email communication to clarify what should actually be updated in the project’s layout files.
  4. A designer or developer should not be required to parse through written direction to decipher and make judgement calls if punctuation within the quoted material is present by request or due to syntax.
